Many philosophies have also been of great influence to her concepts, such as Descartes' conclusive idea "I think therefore I am", which influenced her 2003 series Ideas de una Mente Encarcelada, in which the artist attempts to communicate her thoughts in spray paint grafiti on painted wood canvases, as well as the theories of Roland Barthes, the semiotician, theorist and philosophers' theories of the photographed image, as expressed in his book Camera Lucida, which greatly influenced her photographic work after 2007. Jorge Wagensberg, physicist and modern theorist, with his book Ideas Sobre la Complejidad del Mundo, helped shape Lay's approach to the complex form of comprehension and natural phenomena.
